The state’s pre-eminence in naval shipbuilding has attracted several multinational companies to set up regional headquarters or significant operations here, including BAE Systems Australia, Babcock, Lockheed Martin, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Navantia, Raytheon Australia, Saab Group, ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems and Ultra Electronics.
The state is also headquarters to ASC, the nation's largest specialist defence shipbuilding organisation. ASC built and maintain the Collins class submarines and is the lead shipbuilder for the Air Warfare Destroyer (AWD) program.
The AWD project is being delivered by an alliance made up of lead shipbuilder ASC, mission systems integrator Raytheon Australia, and the Commonwealth Government through the Department of Defence.
South Australia also has a large base of small-to-medium enterprises providing specialist services and products to support naval projects as well as the commercial maritime sector.
The state’s maritime expertise has fostered the development of leading-edge research and training capabilities.
The Defence Science and Technology Group’s significant presence at the Edinburgh Defence Precinct includes the group’s Maritime Division. This division partners with industry to develop advanced naval solutions such as the world-leading Nulka active missile decoy, of which BAE Systems Australia, headquartered at Edinburgh, is the prime contractor and system design agent.
South Australia’s maritime industry works closely with the education and training sector and government to ensure a long-term supply of skilled naval tradespeople and professional engineers.
Key maritime-focused workforce development initiatives include:
- Master of Marine Engineering program (in association with ASC Pty Ltd), University of Adelaide
- Bachelor of Engineering (Naval Architecture), Flinders University and the Australian Maritime College
- the establishment of a dedicated maritime high school
- the Maritime Skills Centre at Techport Australia, which is delivering trade and technical skills required for the AWD project.
