Offshore Patrol Vessels

South Australia’s world-class industrial maritime precinct, Techport Australia, has been confirmed as the location for the commencement of the build of Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs).

The OPVs are an important first step in Australia’s continuous naval shipbuilding strategy.

With the AWD program well advanced, building the OPVs at Techport Australia will ensure our shipbuilding workforce and infrastructure remain engaged until the kickoff of the Future Frigate program in South Australia in 2020.

The competitive evaluation process commenced in December 2015 and in April 2016, the Commonwealth Government confirmed construction of the OPVs would commence in Adelaide in 2018 and transfer to Western Australia when Future Frigate construction begins in 2020.

Three designers have been shortlisted to refine their designs, Damen of the Netherlands, Fassmer of Germany and Lurssen of Germany.

The program is estimated at more than $3 billion and will create more than 400 jobs, plus additional supply chain opportunities.

Twelve vessels will be built in total to replace the 13 existing Armidale Class patrol boats. The OPVs will enhance the Australian Defence Forces' capacity to support border security, maritime resource protection and military patrol and response operations.
