The United Kingdom and South Australian Government have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to forge closer ties in areas of mutual interest, including defence and green hydrogen.

UK Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs Lord David Cameron and South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas signed the agreement in Adelaide today on the sidelines of the AUKMIN meeting.

The MoU will see both jurisdictions work together to forge closer co-operation in key areas of mutual interest including:

  • Defence industries, workforce development and skills capability
  • Critical technologies
  • Decarbonisation, hydrogen and the renewable energy transition
  • Space
  • Creative industries and cultural ties

The trilateral defence and security partnership between Australia, the United Kingdom and United State (AUKUS) will see Adelaide become the home for construction of nuclear-powered SSN-AUKUS submarines.

Both jurisdictions also share a strong commitment to decarbonisation and the renewable energy transition and have a shared interest in the development of new renewable energy generation, including green hydrogen.

The aim of the agreement is to facilitate further commercial, cultural, educational and research and development collaboration.

South Australia and the United Kingdom have long shared close ties, but the challenges of the 21st Century present an opportunity to work even closer.

South Australia finds itself ideally placed to seize upon the opportunities presented by the world’s two greatest challenges – geopolitical instability and decarbonisation.

Through the AUKUS partnership and our shared interest in renewable energy, this Memorandum of Understanding presents an opportunity for both the United Kingdom and South Australia to work towards mutually beneficial outcomes for the future.

This agreement strengthens UK-South Australian cooperation in strategic areas, including defence and green technology.

It builds on the gold standard UK-Australia Free Trade Agreement which was signed in Adelaide, and our AUKUS defence agreement which will see nuclear powered submarines built here.

I’m delighted the UK is signing this important agreement to strengthen our partnership with our South Australian mates.
