The Jindalee Operational Radar Network (JORN) is a multi-billion dollar investment supporting three over-the-horizon radar systems that use the ionosphere to monitor air and sea movements across at least 37,000 square kilometres.
Invented by Defence Science and Technology in South Australia, the high-frequency system is supported from South Australia by BAE Systems Australia, with the command and control element, 1 Remote Sensor Unit, based at RAAF Base Edinburgh. The JORN will receive significant upgrades over the next decade, with the $1.2 billion enhancement set to create more than 500 highly technical jobs, many of them in South Australia.
