South Australia is the national centre of naval shipbuilding and submarine sustainment, and the build location for Australia’s Attack class submarines and Hunter class frigates.

Key current projects include construction of the nation’s Air Warfare Destroyer fleet and sustainment of the Collins class submarine fleet, both delivered at Osborne Naval Shipyard in Adelaide, the country’s premier naval shipbuilding hub.

As a result, South Australia has developed a world-class maritime industry base and highly skilled workforce, with expertise across all naval shipbuilding activities, from systems engineering and integration to hull fabrication.

These assets, combined with Osborne Naval Shipyard's world-class infrastructure and optimal location, will underpin construction of Australia’s new $35 billion Hunter class frigate fleet, due to start in 2020, and the $50 billion Attack class submaine program. Construction commenced on Australia's Arafura offshore patrol vessel fleet in 2018.

South Australia is also home to other key naval projects, including the:

  • Landing Helicopter Dock mission system design, development, integration and in-service support
  • ANZAC ship combat system in-service support
  • Collins class submarine Integrated Ship Control Management and Monitoring System upgrade.
