The $200 million Deep Maintenance and Modification Facility (DMMF) is a landmark defence infrastructure project that is transforming Australia’s sovereign capability in military aircraft sustainment and support.

Strategically positioned adjacent to RAAF Base Edinburgh in northern Adelaide, the DMMF will provide long-term maintenance and modification support for two of the nation’s most critical air platforms – the RAAF P-8A Poseidon and E-7A Wedgetail – which play a critical role in maritime surveillance and airborne early warning operations.

The 2.1-hectare facility includes a 240m-long, 60m-wide, 25m-high four-bay hangar that will be used to service the aircraft, as well as advanced aircraft docking systems for full-access maintenance, and specialised workshops covering structural, mechanical, avionics and mission systems work.

Secure infrastructure for sensitive equipment upgrades and dedicated logistics spaces support extended maintenance operations.

Boeing Defence Australia will deliver upgrades to the aircraft fleets at the facility, including an improved combat system, enhanced anti-submarine warfare capability and upgraded satellite communications to improve integration across the Australian Defence Force.

The DMMF will also support specialised maintenance for international allied aircraft including the Royal New Zealand Air Force’s P-8A fleet. The DMMF will also complement maintenance, repair and overhaul activity planned for the United States Navy’s MQ‑4C Triton aircraft at RAAF Base Edinburgh.

The DMMF was shaped by early concept work driven by Defence SA and delivered as a partnership between the Australian Government Department of Defence and the Government of South Australia, through Renewal SA and BESIX Watpac.
