South Australia’s largest defence contingent set for Euronaval
13 September 2018
South Australia’s largest ever contingent of local defence industry will participate in this year’s international maritime trade show, Euronaval, in Paris from 23-26 October.
Eighteen South Australian companies, along with four local universities and education institutes form the Defence SA stand under the Team Defence Australia umbrella at the leading trade show for naval defence and maritime technologies.
Held every two years in Paris-Le Bourget, the exhibition brings together key decision makers and the international naval industry, including more than 400 exhibitors from European and global countries, and 129 official delegations from 64 countries.
Most of the South Australian companies attending Euronaval 2018 will also participate in a Team Defence Australia trade mission, held from 14-19 October.
The mission will include tours of key advanced manufacturing facilities in Germany and visits to sites operated by Offshore Patrol Vessel designer Lürssen, and Future Frigate designer, the UK’s BAE Systems.
Defence SA Chief Executive Richard Price said Euronaval and the trade mission highlights South Australia’s industry capabilities and allows companies to build international relationships and strengthen their competitiveness for upcoming supply chain contracts.
“It’s fantastic to see the commitment of South Australia’s defence industry that makes up nearly half of Australia’s exhibitors at Euronaval,” he said.
“As well as forming supply chain relationships with key European defence companies, our attendance at this key event promotes South Australia as the ideal investment destination, with Australia’s naval shipbuilding program centred in Adelaide.
“We have a world-class defence industry that is eager and ready to be a part of the global supply chain for upcoming maritime projects, including Offshore Patrol Vessels, Future Frigates and Future Submarines – now is the time to ensure we maximise local industry involvement in this program.”
South Australian-based advanced manufacturing company SAGE Automation, which is involved in the naval shipbuilding local supply chain through a joint venture with Spanish shipbuilder Navantia, will showcase its capabilities to key players in the naval industry at Euronaval.
Paul Johnson, General Manager SAGE Defence, said the company will be looking to grow its relationships with defence primes and suppliers, and work on various teaming arrangements.
“The event will be an important opportunity for us to showcase our electrical engineering, manufacturing, set to work and through life support capabilities, while discussing upcoming projects of significance including the Hunter Class frigates, SEA 1000 and SEA 1180,” he said.
Adelaide’s innovation neighbourhood, Lot Fourteen, will also be promoted on the Team Defence Australia stand as the ideal location for international defence firms aiming to collaborate with Australian researchers and other defence related businesses and to establish a base in the Asia Pacific region.
Businesses joining Lot Fourteen will also be able to access innovation and talent through its strategic defence and space cluster and be supported to launch new products on the market.
Lot Fourteen is the former Royal Adelaide Hospital and is ideally located in the city’s central business district, neighbouring the University of Adelaide, with the Australian Institute of Machine Learning as its anchor tenant.
