Defence SA internship program opens doors for emerging talent

For commerce student Ben Scott, stepping into Defence SA’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Internship Program gave him the hands-on experience, confidence and professional networks needed to launch into a meaningful career.
Ben joined the program while completing his Bachelor of Commerce at Adelaide University, hoping to gain real‑world experience in accounting. What he discovered was a supportive environment where he could apply his studies, build new skills and explore career pathways he hadn’t previously considered.
“The internship program has directly supported my studies. I’ve been able to apply what I’ve learned, build connections and access valuable networking opportunities,” Ben said.
The 12‑month internship, which includes 60 days of paid work and dedicated mentoring, gave Ben the chance to work alongside experienced finance and accounting professionals.
Their guidance helped him understand how financial management, budgeting and strategic planning operate within a government agency that plays a key role in supporting South Australia’s defence and space sectors.
“It’s allowed me to work alongside highly experienced professionals who bring a wealth of knowledge, particularly in the areas of finance and accounting. It has also exposed me to the workings and functions of a government agency.”
For Ben, the internship opened the door to ongoing employment with Defence SA, where he continues to grow his skills and experience. He hopes to join the Australian Army Reserves in the future to broaden his experience and pursue a specialist accounting career within the Australian Defence Force.
Ben encourages others to consider applying, even if they’re still exploring their career direction.
“The internship gives you the chance to step into a professional environment, work on meaningful tasks and see how your studies translate into real work within the defence and space sectors,” he said.
