South Australian innovation saving lives in global conflict zones

South Australian technology company Minelab is delivering life-saving capability to defence forces and humanitarian organisations worldwide, producing advanced mine detection systems for some of the world’s most challenging conditions.

Part of leading South Australian technology company Codan, Minelab has delivered more than 200 of its MDS-20 mine detectors to the Australian Defence Force (ADF), helping detect and clear landmines, improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and other explosive hazards in conflict and post-conflict zones.

Designed, engineered and manufactured at Minelab’s Mawson Lakes facility, the advanced handheld system combines metal detection with ground penetrating radar to detect low-metal mines, plastic explosive containers and complex IEDs across a range of soil types and operating conditions.

Codan Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Alf Ianniello said the milestone highlights the strength of South Australian innovation.

“Our ability to create and commercialise world-leading technology is what sets us apart,” Mr Ianniello said.

“The MDS-20 is the result of decades of investment in Australian engineering, research and development, and demonstrates how South Australian innovation can deliver life-saving capability for defence forces and humanitarian missions around the world.”

Production of the lightweight detectors commenced in November last year, supported by a dedicated production line in South Australia. The compact system can be carried in a pack and deployed across a wide range of terrains to help clear threats in the field.

Minelab Executive General Manager Ben Harvey said the capability reflects the company’s long-standing focus on advanced detection technologies.

“The delivery of 205 MDS-20 Counter-IEDs detectors to the ADF reflects Minelab’s sustained investment in advanced detection technologies,” Mr Harvey said.

“The MDS-20 is … designed to deliver reliable performance in complex and high-risk environments to help keep people safe.”

The detector is part of the Australian Government’s Joint Counter Explosive Hazards (JCEH) Program, through a contract awarded to EPE Trusted to Protect (EPE). EPE is responsible for delivering an integrated detection capability to the ADF, including supply, training and ongoing support, while working closely with Australian partners such as Minelab.

The MDS-20 builds on Minelab’s broader portfolio, including the globally deployed F3 humanitarian demining detector, reinforcing South Australia’s contribution to defence and humanitarian efforts worldwide.

Minelab’s work is supported by a team of more than 80 engineers, highlighting the depth of local expertise in sensor integration, signal processing and ruggedised system design.

EPE’s collaboration with Australian industry partners helps ensure reliable delivery, technical support and the continued evolution of the ADF’s counter-explosive hazard capabilities.
