South Australia-built defence consoles head to Europe in first export

South Australian-based defence leader KONGSBERG Australia has exported the first batch of Australian-made Naval Strike Missile (NSM) Coastal Defence System (CDS) command and control consoles to Europe.

Produced at KONGSBERG Australia’s Mawson Lakes facility, the consoles represent a significant step in delivering advanced, locally manufactured defence capability to international markets.

Assembled, integrated and tested in South Australia, KONGSBERG Australia Managing Director John Fry said the milestone demonstrated the capability of Australian industry to deliver world-class defence solutions.

“This first export delivery is a proud moment for our Australian team and supply chain partners, and our Global Supply Chain Program, demonstrating that Australian industry can deliver complex, high-tech defence capability to international customers while supporting sovereign capability in Australia,” Mr Fry said.

The consoles are based on common hardware already used in the Australian Army’s NASAMS air defence capability, showcasing how local manufacturing expertise can be leveraged across both domestic and international programs.

The NSM Coastal Defence System continues to see strong global demand as a leading land-based maritime strike capability. It has been selected by countries including the United States, Poland, Romania, Denmark and Latvia, while the NSM is in service with or has been selected by a growing number of navies worldwide. The recent export forms part of a previously signed contract between KONGSBERG and a NATO nation.

The delivery also reflects a strong national supply chain with South Australian companies REDARC Defence & Space and QPE Advanced Machining contributing key components and subsystems, alongside Eylex in New South Wales.

REDARC Defence & Space Executive General Manager Scott Begbie said the export success was part of the company’s ongoing collaboration with KONGSBERG.

“Being integrated into KONGSBERG’s global supply chain for such a complex, high-tech capability demonstrates the true potential of South Australia’s defence sector,” Mr Begbie said.

“REDARC Defence & Space takes immense pride in delivering critical components for this milestone, proving that local industry partnerships can seamlessly support world-leading international defence platforms.”

REDARC Defence & Space will continue leveraging its advanced electronics expertise to deliver high-quality components for the NSM CDS consoles, strengthening Australia’s defence industry and capability.
