Babcock to expand South Australian facility
11 April 2025
Only months after opening its state-of-the-art-facility in Woodville North, Babcock Australasia (Babcock) is already expanding its Adelaide footprint, breaking ground on an extension that will add 50 per cent more space to meet the growing need of its local operations.
The $7 million project will see the construction of a new warehouse assembly hall that will serve as a bespoke testing facility to support Babcock’s upgrade of Australia’s Defence High Frequency Communications System (JP9101) and pave the way for future defence projects.
Babcock Australasia CEO Andrew Cridland emphasised the importance of the expansion, which is due for completion by mid-2025.
“We’ve gone straight into phase two of this build at Woodville North because we recognise the need to deliver strategic infrastructure that empowers local businesses, supports jobs, and secures the future of Australia’s defence capabilities,” said Mr Cridland.
“This expansion is one of a number of key initiatives we are currenting undertaking to maximise our support of the Australian Defence Force (ADF).”
The expansion adds to the existing $31 million facility, which opened its doors in October 2024 and is home to more than 100 staff working across nationally significant programs, including supporting the Collins Class submarine fleet and Hunter Class frigates.
Around 110 construction jobs will be supported during the build, with the larger facility set to significantly bolster Babcock’s ability to deliver advanced, sovereign communications capabilities for the ADF, reinforcing South Australia’s position as a key hub for defence industry innovation.
