Codan to boost ADF’s drone communication capabilities
28 January 2025
South Australian defence manufacturer Codan Limited has launched a new radio communications production line to scale-up local manufacturing of its advanced radio technology for the Australian Army’s new Small Uncrewed Aerial System (SUAS).
The Adelaide-headquartered company has secured a significant contract with the Australian Defence Force to integrate its Sentry Mesh 6161 radio into a fleet of CorvoX drones, being designed and developed by Melbourne-based company Sypaq Systems. Codan will also be supplying product through Quantum Systems, with both projects part of the ADF’s DEF129 Uncrewed Aerial System program.
Under the contract, Codan will support the manufacture and delivery of its mesh radio technology from its production facility, located in Adelaide’s north.
Codan designs and exports leading-edge communications and metal detection technologies, including robust systems and products for Defence customers, which enhance communications in harsh environments.
Codan CEO Alf Ianniello said the SUAS project will boost advanced manufacturing in South Australia and create up to 18 high skilled jobs supporting precision engineering and production activities, including video encoding, mesh and algorithm equipment packaging, and certification.
“Codan’s sophisticated facility at Mawson Lakes is about more than just manufacturing,” Mr Ianniello said.
“Codan produces unique Australian IP that enhances the resilience of Australia’s defence industrial base and provides rewarding opportunities for South Australians across a broad mix of disciplines including engineering and technology development.”
Minister for Defence Industry and Capability Delivery Pat Conroy said the partnership between Codan Limited and Sypaq Systems is an excellent example of advancing Australia’s sovereign defence capabilities through local manufacturing and innovation.
“This project is also about providing the Australian Defence Force with the capabilities and equipment it needs to keep Australians safe,” the Minister said.
In July 2024, the Australian Government pledged $100 million towards strengthening the ADF’s drone capabilities, contracting Sypaq to provide its CorvoX SUAS solution as one of the two drones selected.
