Edinburgh Air Show set to soar

South Australia’s RAAF Base Edinburgh will host the Australian Defence Force’s largest air show in November this year.
The Edinburgh Air Show, held from Saturday to Sunday, 9-10 November 2019, will showcase some of the ADF’s most advanced military aircraft, including the latest fifth generation fighter aircraft, the F-35A Joint Strike Fighter, and Defence technologies.
The two-day event will commemorate 100 years since South Australian brothers, Sir Ross and Sir Keith Smith, made their first flight from England to Australia in a Vickers Vimy WWI Bomber aircraft in 1919.
Air Commodore Noddy Sawade, Head of Air Shows, says the Air Show will feature a wide range of ADF fast jet, transport and rotary wing aircraft.
“Air Force’s newest maritime patrol aircraft the P-8A Poseidon, which calls Adelaide home, will be on display, alongside jets such as F/A-18 Hornet Fighters and heavy lift capabilities such as the C-17A Globemaster,” Air Cdre Sawade said.
“The F-35A is the Air Force’s first fifth-generation air combat capability.
“This supersonic stealth fighter has advanced sensors and data fusion, which enable it to gather and share information with Navy ships, Army units and other Air Force aircraft.”
Air Commodore Phil Gordon, Senior Australian Defence Force Officer, Edinburgh Defence Precinct, is proud to host the Air Show at RAAF Base Edinburgh.
“This will be the first ADF Air Show at RAAF Base Edinburgh in 12 years, so I encourage anyone interested in aviation and Defence to come along for an exhilarating, family focused weekend of flying and static displays,” Air Cdre Gordon said.
In recognition of the pair’s epic flight, the morning flying displays from 10am to 12 noon will feature historic and vintage military aircraft.
Flying displays featuring the latest Air Force, Navy and Army aircraft will take place from 2-4pm. RAAF Base Edinburgh will open its gates at 9am with the Air Show concluding at 4pm each day with a free concert by the Air Force Rock Band.
More than 60 exhibitors will have stands in the commercial trade hall with a significant number focusing on aeronautical and aerospace education and future employment in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths sectors.
Other activities at the Air Show include interactive experiences from Navy, Army and Air Force units, state and federal government and Defence industry partners, indoor drone racing, displays from military working dogs, concerts from the Air Force Band and free children’s rides.
