Global defence company establishes in SA

Global aerospace and defence technology innovator, L3Harris, has successfully launched in South Australia to support the nation’s future warships and continuous naval shipbuilding program.

L3Harris’ MAPPS business, which specialises in marine control systems and simulation products, has established a central operational hub at Mawson Lakes’ Technology Park, less than a year after moving into the Defence and Space Landing Pad at Lot Fourteen

Launched in September 2018, the Defence and Space Landing Pad provides international companies looking to expand into Australia with affordable, short-term office facilities, free advice and relationship building opportunities.

L3Harris’ Maritime International president, Rangesh Kasturi, says the Defence and Space Landing Pad enabled the company to connect with local industry partners, build on their long-term investment plans and break into the local market.

“L3Harris has many years’ experience providing world-leading equipment and support services to the Royal Australian Navy,” Kasturi says.

“With South Australia positioned as a growing and thriving hub for defence business, thanks to the majority of the nation’s naval shipbuilding program being based here, the Defence and Space Landing Pad provided a good local base to really establish ourselves and start working with other defence stakeholders.

“It was an excellent opportunity for L3Harris as we grow our Australian footprint and expand our presence in the maritime domain in the region.”

The company is responsible for the development and sustainment of advanced technology, such as shipboard control systems, and will manage the delivery and integration of the systems for the new Arafura class offshore patrol vessels, and other future platforms.

It hopes to grow its skilled local workforce significantly over the next five years.

Defence SA chief executive Richard Price says L3Harris’ expansion into South Australia is a major boost to the state’s defence capability and a testament to the support received through the Defence and Space Landing Pad.

“As the first company to join the Defence and Space Landing Pad, L3Harris is a fantastic example of the well-established international companies we want to attract to South Australia,” Price says.

“The Defence and Space Landing Pad is a unique opportunity for overseas businesses, like L3Harris, to begin their business journey in a collaborative, supportive and innovative environment at Lot Fourteen.”
