SA collaboration to power battery system for UK submarines
10 June 2025
South Australian defence manufacturers APC Technology and PMB Defence are collaborating on a critical component of the battery monitoring system for the UK’s nuclear submarine program.
Under the collaboration, APC Technology, a leading Australian manufacturer of ruggedised computing and display solutions for Defence, will design and build specialised display units that interface with PMB Defence’s advanced battery monitoring systems.
The display units will deliver critical operational data and visibility of the performance and status of the submarine batteries – an essential component of the vessel’s propulsion chain.
As a global manufacturer of submarine battery systems, PMB Defence is testing and qualifying is cutting-edge battery system for UK’s nuclear submarine program, after signing as contract with the UK Ministry of Defence in August 2024.
The batteries provide critical back-up power to the submarine, with the onboard nuclear reactor generating steam which powers turbines that not only propel the submarine, but also charge its battery systems.
The two companies are working closely on the early scoping stages of the display solution for the battery monitoring system, ensuring it meets the demands of naval operations in one of the world’s most challenging environments.
With a strong track record in delivering mission-critical technology to the defence sector, this project signifies APC Technology’s expanding role in supporting nuclear-powered submarine programs
The collaboration also highlights South Australia’s world-class industrial capabilities and the opportunities for local partnerships to support AUKUS partner programs.
