South Australian expertise to strengthen Navy’s anti-submarine warfare capability

South Australia’s defence industry has received another major boost, with Ultra Maritime at Mawson Lakes selected to deliver a cutting-edge torpedo defence system for the Royal Australian Navy’s Hunter class frigates.
BAE Systems Maritime Australia has awarded Ultra Maritime the contract to supply its Surface Ship Torpedo Defence (SSTD) system, a world-leading capability designed to protect warships from underwater threats. Each Hunter class frigate will be equipped with the SSTD system, which combines advanced acoustic detection and integrated countermeasures.
Using a sonar and two decoy methods, the system not only detects incoming torpedoes but also advises crews on tactics, such as zig-zags or hard turns, to defeat a detected torpedo.
This new contract builds on Ultra Maritime’s existing role in the program, with the company already delivering the Bow Sonar, which provides a medium-range active and passive sonar system for submarine detection.
Delivery Director, Acquisition at BAE Systems Maritime Australia Andy Coxall said the partnership demonstrates the importance of local suppliers.
“The Hunter class frigates are a critical capability for protecting Australian shores and safeguarding the accessibility of ship lanes and undersea cables that our nation depends on,” Mr Coxall said.
“Ultra Maritime is a world-leader in anti-submarine warfare and its expertise and proven solutions will deliver next-generation naval capabilities to these Tier 1 warships, ensuring they are equipped to meet evolving security challenges.”
Ultra Maritime’s South Australian base at Mawson Lakes will play a central role in delivering the technology, reinforcing the state’s position as a hub for sovereign undersea warfare capability.
Vice President and General Manager of Ultra Maritime Jonathan Sadleir, said the contract expands the number of vessels benefitting from the company’s anti-submarine warfare technologies.
“Ultra Maritime is proud to provide the Royal Australian Navy with a full sense to effect capability that keeps ships and crews safe from torpedo threats,” Mr Sadleir said.
“Leveraging global expertise, Ultra Maritime is positioned to support future maritime programs for AUKUS while continuing to grow and develop Australia’s sovereign undersea warfare capabilities.”
The announcement underscores South Australia’s growing role in delivering advanced defence technologies. With the Hunter class frigate program headquartered Osborne Naval Shipyard and supported by a strong local supply chain, the state continues to anchor Australia’s maritime defence capability.
