Wired for growth: French cable manufacturer expands into South Australia
22 May 2026
French manufacturer Axon Cable is the latest international company to move into South Australia’s Defence and Space Landing Pad at Lot Fourteen, as it accelerates its entry into the state’s defence and space sectors.
The company, which specialises in the design and manufacture of customised cables, connectors and assemblies for defence, aerospace and other key markets is expanding its global footprint into South Australia.
Axon Australian Unit’s Global Manger Stephane Watier said the decision to establish a presence in South Australia followed a visit to Lot Fourteen as part of a Business France delegation late last year.
He said the concentration of defence and space companies at the world-class innovation district, along with its reputation for driving collaboration and innovation between industry and the research community, made the move an obvious choice.
“Many of our customers were already in South Australia, including ASC and BAE Systems,” Mr Watier said. “The collaborative ecosystem and the international reputation of Lot Fourteen made it a perfect match for us.”
Axon already supplies specialised cables for ASC’s existing shipyard operations and the company is eager to build long‑term relationships with potential supply chain partners across defence, naval shipbuilding and space projects in South Australia.
Mr Watier said the Defence and Space Landing Pad’s co‑location model, shared facilities and proximity to major Defence primes and other innovative companies would allow Axon to strengthen existing connections and build new partnerships for future work.
“Work on large projects never happens in a few weeks or months, you need to spend time building the relationships, collaborating and going through qualification processes,” he said.
“Being in close proximity to major Defence and naval shipbuilding projects in South Australia makes it easier to be involved in new projects and to react quickly with local support.”
Defence SA Chief Executive Matt Opie said the Landing Pad provides an ideal environment for overseas and interstate companies to build industry relationships, with Lot Fourteen’s collaborative environment a major drawcard.
“South Australia is home to some of the nation’s most significant defence and space programs, and the Landing Pad provides a strong foundation for companies looking to establish themselves here,” Mr Opie said.
“The precinct brings together industry, research and government in a way that develops capability and supports companies to contribute to Australia’s defence and space strategic priorities.”
Axon plans to use its Adelaide base to expand co‑engineering work with customers, integrating its engineering teams with those of Defence primes to design customised cable systems for complex platforms.
With footprints across America, Europe, and Asia, the company recognises a strong synergy between its expertise and the expanding defence and space sectors in South Australia, positioning Australia as a key long-term market.
