QinetiQ partners with DSTG to develop high energy laser capability

South Australia is set to be home to high energy laser manufacturing capability with Defence awarding QinetiQ Australia a $12.9 million contract.

A world leader in laser research and technology, QinetiQ will work collaboratively with Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) to establish a high energy defensive laser system prototype capable of deployment in a wide range of operational environments.

Chief Defence Scientist, Professor Tanya Monro AC, explained this collaboration is an example of how DSTG is facilitating the rapid transition of new science and technology into Defence capability.

“DSTG is partnering with industry to build advanced and competitive Australian sovereign capabilities for our Defence Force in critical technology areas,” said Professor Monro.

“The high energy laser manufacturing capability is an example of how we can work with industry to support emerging and disruptive technologies.”

Managing Director of Engineering Services at QinetiQ, Simon Fredericks, said the company are proud to be partnering with DSTG to manufacture the system.

“By leveraging QinetiQ’s high-power laser technology and test and evaluation expertise in collaboration with DSTG’ scientific innovation, we will deliver enhanced sovereign capability to the ADF,” he said.
